How to get motivated during lockdown?
Lockdown makes people agitated after the initial curiosity and some sort of ecstasy or fantasy; it is getting boring and the daily routine starts to grind you down — the same horrible negative media day in and day out; the same shambles in the news; Trump may bring some change which for some is a bless and for others is a hell; either way, that fantasy is soon done and gone. Then how can you get motivated with life?
There is only so much permutation in life but the excitement and motivation lies in the details. If you start to examine things around you through the microscopic view of your eyes, then you are sure to be motivated by life. The other day, I was so bored that I found nothing to be of meaning. As a routine, I hold a handful of basmati rice to feed the chickens; I thought, “This is boring!” Then, I said to myself, “The chickens enjoy uncooked rice, why?” Then I put a grain of rice in my mouth and grind it with my teeth. Wow, there arises the distinctive aroma in my mouth! I started to study the handful of rice, with different shapes, colours, some translucent, some even sort of transparent. Then, I decided to do a bit research on rice and its uniqueness. A new world opened up to me; I learned things which I have taken for granted all the time. For example, rice does not have to grow in paddy fields; some variety grows in seawater or on mountain tops like trees. People are very creative in the use of rice, and some companies are extracting the unique flavour from rice to make perfume and farmers are benefiting from this novel use of rice with their surplus. Worldwide folklores abound, evolving around gratitude to deities for such a great blessing of rice. so and so forth. This rice episode has engaged great time and taken me to different parts of the world with diverse cultures; I have seen striking colours of celebration and gratitude, tasted all sorts of aroma arising from happy families and their reverence to deities for the blessing, and traversed highs and lows, up to the mountains and down to the seas.
Indeed, motivation is everywhere, only that you slow down or stop to observe things with fresh eyes and easy minds. Go outside on a sunny and lie down on the grass; the fragrance of the grass may inspire, so may the different shapes of clouds. You may see the shape of a deity in the cloud, or your friend, or animals, landscapes; all that may set you off on a great journey and motivate you to live more of life and appreciate more of the routines around you.
As the world is more transparent with information and knowledge explosion and ready at fingertip, the depth of the river is no longer new, nor is the length of the river. All motivation has to come from within and in the microscopic world of the routine lies the miracle and excitement. Cook a meal creatively, or put soda water into new uses, or rework your radio, etc etc. Do something differently and you are sure to find motivation.
Lockdown is nothing unique; we are in a lockdown all the time, the only difference being the length, possibly, the nature, or the official or unofficial version of it. The great thing is that every lockdown unfolds new landscapes and uncovers new potential within us. All adds to the life in years; at the end of the day, it is life in years that counts, rather than years in life.
