Wellbeing: What to Expect?
Precisely because you are not being well, you want to find out how to attain wellbeing in life, just as a rich person never reads advice on how to become rich or a happy person never needs to know how to be happy. But, just as the meaning of life can never be meaningfully found, so it is an impossible task to learn about wellbeing. That said, it does not mean there is no way to be well and live well. Donald Trump provides all the answers for wellbeing.
No matter how much you like or dislike Donal Trump, he is the chosen one for the whole world to reflect upon. As regards wellbeing, he is vilified, maligned and cursed every single second of the day throughout the years; mud and rubbish are thrown at him all the time. Is he hurt? Maybe only he himself can answer that question. What we apparently know is that he does not bother at all; those horribles simply like water off the duck’s back. This is likely to be true; otherwise, he would be dashed into pieces by himself were he to mind those things and allow them to torment him.
Whether he can be called a great person, people have different views. Where people agree, all the great people in history suffer the same sort of things. Jesus was nailed to the cross and crucified for doing nothing but good, for being kind and for being loving. Buddha was despised by people who spread untrue rumours to undermine his reputation, to defame him and to destroy him; and one of his followers ever tried to kill him by throwing a rock on to him from above. NOW that those saintly figures were treated like this, there is no wonder that ordinary people have all sorts of unfair treatment from others, experience base people as lowly as snakes, and receive undeserved animosity, blame, derogatory criticism and so on and on. Just because we are all humans, we could not understand those treatments, nor could we figure out why life has to be taking the sweet with the tough, taking the mud with the rose. we all have it. One bad apple in a whole basket good apples may be enough to disgust you for days; when that bad apple is thrown at you out of the blue, it feels like your whole life is trashed or your whole holiday is ruined. A lowly cur is thrown at your life, and he or she undermines you at every corner of your turning for no reason but for self satiation of their insane desires.
If, however, you sit back and reflect on those saintly lives and those numerous ordinary lives, you may suddenly realise that, regardless of whom you are, life is just like that, hence there is no reason that you should be surprised and traumatised by what happens in life. In this light, were you to expect roses to be thrown at you, you would be bound to find the opposite somehow and nothing but disappointment. On the contrary, if you rightly expect mud to be thrown at you, you will never be disappointed. Wonderful people we all prize deeply, great justice we all treasure greatly, beautiful sunset we all appreciate cheerfully, but inevitably, nasty people suddenly pop up in our life, injustice is hurtled upon us out of the blue, rainy windy days and dark skies unfailingly blow to us. In the face of all the changes in life, whether we live well really depends on our expectation. It is our expectation that determines our wellbeing, just as great people are always in full expectation of mud being thrown at them, they calmly deal with it, never be bothered about it; rather, they simply treat it as expected, as part of life. There is nothing to fear; they could not hurt you when they come, as you expect mud to be thrown at you at some stage of your life; precisely because you know they might come, you do not bother about them; let them be and be happily and readily dealing with them when they do come.
Nothing changes Jesus; Jesus is still Jesus. Nothing changes Buddha; Buddha is still Buddha. Nothing changes you; you are still you. You know what to expect of life, and you know how to live well in full expectation and, more importantly, in full enjoyment. Turning a deaf ear to those maligning tongues, as you know they are being dealt with by a higher force; giving your path to a barking dog, as you know they are born to be lowly and capable of nothing but being lowly; why contesting the right with it? Like Abraham Lincoln put it, even killing the dog could not cure the bite. You are better and higher, you do not even want to dirty your hands in touching the lowly dog, let alone killing it. Like Dhamma advises,
“Be like a lion that trembles not at sounds.
Be like the wind that does not cling to the meshes of a net.
Be like a lotus that is not contaminated by the mud from which it springs up.”
Next time when mud is thrown at you, when bricks are hurtled on your face, or when shit spits on your face, you are not to let them bother you; rather, like the lion, or like the lotus, you proceed to live your beautiful life and enjoy your enjoyable life to the full. Mud teaches you not to get dirty in it; rather, stand up and grow to be that beautiful lotus. Be well and live well, that is the best weapon you have to destroy that nastiness, trash that malignment, erase that lowliness of the cur; that is the weapon you have to get the cur out of your way.
